Six Senses Resort in Koh Samui, Thailand

The first words that come to mind when I try to describe the vibe at the Six Senses Koh Samui are tribal luxury. The resort consists of 66 exquisite villas that look like beach huts on the outside but feature private pools and all the luxuries you might need. Each villa is tucked away under lush greenery, drenched in the sounds of birds, with butterflies lazily gliding around. At night, the entire hotel grounds are dimly lit by torch-like lights sprinkled among the palm trees and ferns covering the property. All of these details allow the Six Senses Koh Samui to take you into the jungle but still bring you all the luxury and comfort you need too. 

The Villas

Each villa offers a sun deck and lounge area, spacious air-conditioned bathroom, outdoor shower, and all the luxuries you expect from a 5 star resort. It is clear that the entire space was designed with privacy in mind. Each villa is surrounded by palm trees and thick plants and feels private and secluded. It’s impossible to peak into your neighbor’s space or even hear anything outside your own. 

There are a lot of mosquitoes but the resort provides anti-mosquito incense, which housekeeping will light for you every evening as they make up your room. The private pool areas are very cozy and comfortable with sun beds and comfortable day beds. There are sun chairs and comfortable outdoor seating perfect for lounging around. 

Our favorite thing about the villa was our view though. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the sea with colors exploding over the sky. And we could watch the show right from our comfortable bed.

Dining

There are two restaurants in the resort – On The Rocks and On The Hill. Both restaurants offer chic but comfortable atmosphere and beautiful views of the ocean. The buffet breakfast is served on the Hill and is one of the best we’ve ever had. There are many Western and Asian dishes from dim sum and sushi to classic eggs and bacon to things you’ve never tried.

We found the dinner menu to be a lot more limited though. If you are like us and like eating at the hotel a lot, you might get tired of the menu. There are a lot of fried or deep fried dishes on the menu and very limited vegetarian or western options.

Pool And Beach

The infinity pool for common use is quite large – perfect for a few laps in the morning. It features a knee-deep area, which is great if you just want to dip your feet in the water on a hot day. This is the best place in the resort to watch the sunset over the beach and the neighboring islands.

The hotel also has a nice beach, which never got busy during our stay. There is a small bar and drinks service at the beach as well.

Things To Do

The hotel offers a schedule of activities for its guests, some of which you can join for a fee but others are free. Make sure you check for those.

There are a few temples in Koh Samui that you can visit while staying here. Most people go to the Big Buddha but our favorite was actually Wat Plai Laem. It is a little smaller but also a lot less crowded. It’s just a 5-10 minute car ride from the Six Senses, or you can also take a bike from the hotel and ride there. We recommend you to get there before 9am as that’s when the tour buses start to arrive.

Sustainability

One of the things we love about the Six Senses in general is how environmentally conscious their resorts are. For example, the effort to reduce the use of single-use plastic was obvious at the Six Senses Koh Samui. All of the toiletries that are typically for single use and come in plastic packaging at most hotels, are either packaged in paper or come in ceramic containers here. We also noticed the drinks by the pool come with a lemongrass straw instead of a plastic one, which is a very creative idea!
